A folder opened on its README, drawn in HTML with the demo’s sample folder. Not a screenshot.

Space on a folder shows Quick Look’s icon, size and date. spacebar makes it one pane: press Space on a folder, a Markdown file, a script, a config or a zip, or, with the Space helper, any file, and the sidebar lists every file in that folder, each a click away.

Install It

Download for Mac

Or paste this in Terminal

curl -fsSL https://spacebar.patebryant.com/install.sh | sh

The script downloads the latest notarized release from GitHub, checks its SHA-256 and installs to ~/Applications, no sudo. Read the script.

Press Space

  1. Select a folder, or a Markdown file in one.
  2. SpaceIt opens on its README, index or Home note, else an overview; a folder of pictures, on a grid.
  3. ↑ ↓Click a file, or move with the arrow keys.
  4. Space EscClose it. If the sidebar holds the arrows, the first press hands them back.

Folder previews are on by default; "folderMode": false in settings.json turns them off. A Space window stays open until you close it.

On text, HTML, CSV, video, images and PDFs, macOS keeps Space for Apple’s own viewer unless you turn on the optional Space helper, which asks for Accessibility. Without it, start from the folder and pick the file.

What Previews In The Pane

Markdown, HTML, PDFs, images (HEIC, RAW and PSD too), video and audio, code and config files (YAML, TOML, XML, plists, including binary ones), JSON as a tree, CSV/TSV tables, Jupyter notebooks, rich text, archives (listed without extracting), logs and text, UTF-8 or not. Office, iWork, fonts and 3D models get Apple’s own preview inside spacebar’s window; anything else gets its Finder thumbnail and Open with.

The full table, with limits: every file type. Beside Apple’s Quick Look: Quick Look replacement and compare.

The Sidebar

Folder Quick Look and Folder Preview, from the Mac App Store, list what’s inside a folder or an archive in Quick Look. spacebar previews each file in the list too, in the same pane.

Questions

Can Quick Look preview a folder?

Apple’s Quick Look shows a folder’s icon, size and date. With spacebar, Space on a folder lists every file in it in a sidebar and previews each one in the same pane.

Does it work on zips too?

Yes. Space on a zip, tar or 7z lists what’s inside as a tree, and a click opens a text, code, image or PDF file inside it, read-only, without extracting anything.

How do I turn folder previews off?

Folder previews are on by default. "folderMode": false in settings.json turns them off.
